Biden informed reporters at a Nantucket, Massachusetts press event that the recent shooting at the an Colorado nightclub for LGBTHence, the necessity to pass an assault weapons ban was reinforced.
Biden said, “The idea that we allow semi-automatic weapon purchases is sick.” “It has no socially redeeming value… Not a single solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers.”
Semi-automatic guns (handguns, rifles) fire one bullet with each pull of their triggers.
Biden indicated that he would urge federal lawmakers to adopt a new assault weapons prohibition before January when the next Congress begins. The House was taken over by the Republicans.

The president said, “I’m going try.” “I’m going to try to get rid of assault weapons.”
Biden stated that he would work with lawmakers to assess whether success is possible. At this point, odds are not in Biden’s favor.
Biden claimed that the recent shooting at a Colorado LGBT club had strengthened his resolve for an assault weapons ban.

The House is controlled by Democrats with a narrow margin, except for January. The Senate is divided 50-50 between the two parties. A comprehensive gun control package that includes a ban on assault guns must be passed by at least 10 GOP supporters to get the Senate to waive its 60-vote filibuster threshold.

Biden’s call to ban assault weapons earlier this year was rejected by Republicans. Nearly two dozen GOP senators, however, resisted the gun lobby to push a bipartisan gun bill.
January will not be a good month for the political climate. While Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans, the party kept narrow control of the Senate — albeit nowhere near enough to break an expected filibuster without GOP support.
