Biden Administration Notifies Approved Students Loan Relief Applicants

After asking the Supreme Court for help in saving its student-loan forgiveness program, the Biden administration began notifying applicants that they have been approved.

The Department of Education started sending emails to borrowers on Saturday. They alerted them of their approval for debt relief and provided details about any lawsuits that may be preventing the program from being implemented.

Insider received an email from Miguel Cardona, Education Secretary. He wrote: “We have reviewed your application and found that you are eligible to receive loan relief under the Plan. We have passed this approval to your loan provider. “You don’t need to take further action.”

Cardona said that the administration does not believe the lawsuits merit and that the Department of Justice made an appeal for the benefit of the borrowers. Cardona wrote, “Your application has been approved. We will discharge your approved debt if we prevail in court.”

Friday’s Justice Department urged the Supreme CourtBiden’s plan can move forward, after it was blocked by a lower judge in October. Biden’s plan would forgive federal borrowers up to $20,000 of student debt.

The lawsuit was brought by six states run by Republicans who argued the administration is  overstepping its executive powers and that they could suffer financial losses due to the loan-forgiveness plan.

According to the Biden administration approximately 26 million people16 million students applied for student loan relief. The payments for student loans were suspended due to the pandemic. They will resume in January.
