Astronomers believe they have figured out how to predict when a supernova will occur: ScienceAlert

This study could help us to better understand how and when supernovae might occur in the universe. Supernovae are the plural form for supernova (SN).

Daichi Tusuna, an astrophysicist from the Research Center for the Early Universe at the University of Tokyo and the lead author of the study, stated that “it is important from my perspective in two aspects.”

First, although we know supernovae (SNe), are explosions that signal the death of massive star, it is still a mystery what happens at the end of the star’s life. Recent observations have shown that SN precursors cannot be predicted using the standard theory of stellar development.

“Our paper asserts that future observations can be used to probe the precursor in detail. This will allow us to improve our understanding of stellar development and refine our theory. According to the study, eruption light curves that are fueled by a short shockwave pulse last only for a few days before being followed by a much longer cooling discharge lasting for hundreds of years.

Lower energy eruptions are followed by a short peak period, fueled in part by what is known as the bound envelope or pulling back.

According to the study, such mass eruptions can be used as an early warning system for a near future SN. This will prove useful in multi-messenger studies on core-collapse SNe.

Tsuna said, “One thing I would like to stress is that there is a bright future for detection of these kinds of rather dim precursors.”

“For instance, the Rubin Observatory will conduct wide-field survey observations in a few years at sensitivity far deeper than current surveys. This instrument would detect these types of emission and could be used to probe the extraordinary end stages of a huge star’s life.
