Aston Villa spoke to Amorim, but Pochettino was not interested in replacing Gerrard

Villa are seeking a new manager following Gerrard’s resignation on Thursday after a 3-0 defeat to Fulham.

Amorim, 37 years old, is widely recognized as one of Europe’s most talented young managers. The former Portugal international led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in 2020-21 and was subsequently named the Primeira Liga’s manager of the season.

He also managed an impressive victory of 2-0 over Tottenham Hotspur in this season’s Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino has not yet indicated that he is open to the possibility of replacing Gerrard at Villa. The Argentine would rather wait to be able to return to management at a more senior level.

As uncertainty grew around Gerrard’s future, it is believed Villa gauged Pochettino’s interest and were made aware of the Argentine’s intentions — which are not thought to have changed.

Tuchel, however, isn’t interested in moving to Villa Park, just like Pochettino.

Villa are one of many clubs who are interested in the Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

Brentford, however are hopeful that the 49-year old will continue at the club. The club is currently 10th in this league. Premier League and Frank said at his pre-match press conference that he had “unfinished business” with the club.

Villa is just one spot above the Premier League relegation zone having earned nine points in 11 games this season.

They last played in Europe under Kevin MacDonald’s caretaker manager, in the 2010-11 seasons. They were eliminated in the playoff stage. Europa LeagueRapid Wien is an Austrian side.

Pochettino is, however, a manager in the Champions League over the past six years.

Paris Saint-Germain employed the 50-year-old most recently. He won the Ligue 1 title 2021-22 with a side that included Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

His previous five-year stint in north London was with Tottenham Hotspur. He led the club to the Champions League finals in 2019, which they lost. Liverpool.

Pochettino was approached by 14-time Champions League winner Real MadridThree times, in between, most recently in summer 2021, before Carlo Ancelotti was finally appointed by the Spanish side.
