Arsenal’s Pablo Mari stabbed and in hospital after shopping centre attack, Gunners statement says defender ‘not seriously hurt’

Pablo Mari, an Arsenal loanee, was among the many people who were stabbed during a attack on a shopping center near Milan on Thursday.

The defender is currently on loan from the CFK. Serie Aclub Monza, is currently receiving treatment in hospital. However, he is not considered seriously injured.

Mari will spend the night at Niguarda hospital, where he will have surgery to repair muscle damage in his back.

Arsenal released a statement which read: “We are all shocked to hear the dreadful news about the stabbing in Italy, which has put a number of people in hospital including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari.

“We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt.

“Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident.”

Local reports claim that a man attacked Assago residents and killed a cashier aged 30 years old.

After Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven, manager Mikel Arteta said: “I just found out. I know [technical director]Edu is in contact with his family. He’s in hospital but he seems to be okay.”

Monza president Adriano Galliani released a statement via the club’s official Twitter account which read: “Dear Pablo, we are all here close to you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you know how to do, you are a warrior and you will get well soon.”

Galliani told Sky Sports Italy that Mari was punched in the face, stabbed in the back, but ‘saved’ due to his 6ft 4ins height.

He claimed Mari also wants to go back to Monza training Monday.

“Pablo Mari had a fairly deep wound on his back, which fortunately did not touch vital organs such as the lungs or other,” Galliani said in quotes reported by Sky Sports Italy.

“His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly.”

Police arrested a 46 year-old Italian man. They ruled out terrorist motives for the incident that occurred at the Carrefour supermarket in Milanofiori di Assago.
