Arizona will be paid $85 million by Google for illegally tracking Android users

Arizona will receive $85 million from Google Settlement of a 2020 lawsuitAccording to, the search giant illegally tracked Android users. Bloomberg reports. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich stated that Google continued to track users in targeted advertising despite them turning off their location data settings. This sounds familiar? It’s because Google is also being sued in Texas, Washington D.C., Indiana and Washington over similar data-tracking complaints. Brnovich’s team also noted that the $85million settlement was the largest amount Google paid per user in a privacy suit like this.

Google currently sees quarterly revenue of over $69billion, so the punishment might seem like a small drop in the bucket. It is nothing when compared to the EU Fined Google $1.7 Billion Over abusive advertising practices. In a statement, Google spokesman José Castañeda said the suit was related to older product policies that have been changed. “We provide straightforward controls and auto delete options for location data, and are always working to minimize the data we collect,” he said. “We are pleased to have this matter resolved and will continue to focus our attention on providing useful products for our users.”

Brnovich, meanwhile, says he’s “proud of this historic settlement that proves no entity, not even big tech companies, is above the law.”
