Anna Sorokin, Con Artist and Inspiration for ‘Inventing Anna’ Returns To Manhattan

Fake German heiress Anna Sorokin travelled straight to New York City after she was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody Friday. 

31-year-old Sorokin was released from Orange County Correctional Facility in 80 miles northwest New York City after more than a year. Year behind bars because she overstayed her visaAccording to law enforcement, she was.  To complete paperwork, she was taken to the FBI headquarters in Lower Manhattan before being allowed to her East Village home. The New York Post reports.

The NY Post interviewed Sorokin on the night of her release and she said that she was happy to be back in Manhattan.

She was photographed in a sweatsuit and an ankle monitor while she spoke with the media at her apartment building.

It is unclear how long Sorokin will remain in house arrest for. However, according to her release, she was prohibited from using social media and required to post $10,000 bail. Cheryl Teh, Insider, reports.

Sorokin answered many questions when asked by the NY Post about her plans for a career in art. Drawings made in the Immigration Detention CenterShe did not give away too many details.

“I don’t know. Sorokin said, “We’ll just have to wait until we see.”

Sorokin was convicted of multiple charges — including grand larceny — in 2019 after pretending to be a German heiress named Anna Delvey in order to scam New York City socialites.

This German citizen went on a long-running crime spree that lasted years. She swindled thousands of dollars from her friends and hotels and millions from Fortress Investment Group. Bloomberg reports.

After spending two years behind bars, she was released in February 2021. She was then detained six weeks later by ICE. Although she is no longer in detention the results of her investigation are not yet available. The immigration proceedings against Sorokin are still pending.

Thanks to a friend, Sorokin was made famous. 2018 New York Magazine piece The series, which detailed her crimes, was then followed by a 2022 Netflix show titled “Inventing Anna.”
