An ex-MA state police officer is released from jail after he abused overtime to avoid being sent to prison

An example of a former Massachusetts StateAfter admitting his part in the widespread overtime abuse scandal which ravaged the department and led several reforms, a police lieutenant was released without being arrested.

David Keefe (57), the former commander at the Weston barracks was sentenced to two years probation Thursday after pleading guilty for larceny, violating public employee standard of conduct, according to the statement by the state attorney general.

Keefe was also required to pay $20,000 restitution and perform 100 hours of community work.

Keefe Filled fraudulent claimsProsecutors said he worked more than 200 hours overtime in 2015 and 2016. At the time, he was a supervisor with Troop E (now disbanded), which was responsible traffic enforcement along Massachusetts Turnpike.

Authorities claim that the scheme involved dozens of troopers, both active and retired, who were employed by Troop E. They received overtime pay for any shifts they didn’t work or completed. Some troopers falsely issued traffic tickets in order to appear on duty.

The scandal led to criminal charges against Many troopersThere have been many changes at the agency, including GPS tracking cruisers and increased supervision, regular attendance audits and additional ethical training.

Keefe has since retired and was one of the three lieutenants who were indicted in this case. The two other lieutenants pleaded guilty previously.
