An afterthought a year ago, Tony Gonsolin is the man of the Dodgers’ moment in Game 3

Their pitching staff was tired. Gonsolin was suffering from an injury to his right shoulder and had to work in short stints throughout the regular season. His durability was in such question that the Dodgers didn’t even have Gonsolin start that night. He was the fourth Dodgers starter to enter Game 1 in the NLCS. As recently as this spring, he wasn’t even a lock to make the rotation.

Gonsolin now is the man to watch. With the NLDS tied at 1-1, the first-time All-Star will be taking the pitch for Game 3.

It is now about his health.

Gonsolin, who has been suffering from a forearm injury since August, has thrown only 40 competitive pitches. It won’t be a full-fledged start for the 28-year-old right-hander, whatever that definition means within the bounds of the postseason.
