American sides could be invited by UEFA Super Cup four-team competition. This would see Europa Conference League winners join a revamped competition

American teams could face the Champions League winners in a revamped Super Cup that’s reportedly being considered by UEFA.

The Champions League and Europa League winners will be featured in this event. However, the Europa Conference League winners will also be included.

The American champions could be brought into the UEFA Super Cup in the future

Future UEFA Super Cups could see the American champions brought in to the competition.

According to the PA news agency, discussions are ongoing to create a season-opening four-team event to replace Super Cup.

The United States, considered the key growth market for European football, is the main destination under discussion and one option would be to include the host country’s champions – in this case, the winners of Major League Soccer – as the fourth team in the competition.

UEFA’s new English-language US broadcast rights deal for its men’s European club competitions represents a 150 per cent improvement on its existing contract, with further revenue still to be generated from the sale of Spanish-language rights.

It is understood there have not been any serious talks at this stage about playing Champions League matches – either group-stage games, knockout matches or the final – outside Europe.

The idea of a new opening competition to replace the Super Cup in 2024 is growing in popularity as a way to generate more revenue for European football.

PA was told by sources that there were many options for achieving that goal, such as having the matches played at a weekend festival or having pop music perform during half-time.

They mention that other sports have succeeded in taking matches to new markets such as the NFL playing regular season games in London.

Further discussions are set to take place at the European Club Association’s General Assembly in Istanbul on Thursday and Friday, with the organisation keen to foster a spirit of innovation.

Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 CEO, has been invited by the organizers to speak about how Formula 1 is trying to attract new fans.

The ECA Chairman Nasser al Khelaifi will likely issue a warning about clubs regarding dangerous debt levels, in light of rising interest rates on the continent.

Talks will continue to discuss a new financial model for European tournaments that are post-2024.

The smaller clubs will demand a higher share while the big ones will want more.

The European Leagues Group has demanded major changes in the way money is split between competitions. Additionally, a greater percentage should be allocated to solidarity payments to non-competing clubs.

It is asking for a reduction in the amount of money that clubs receive based on historical coefficient and TV market pool. These factors are currently what determine how 45 percent of Champions League money is divided. But European Leagues believes that the Europa Conference League distribution splitting is fairer and should be adopted into the Champions League.

40% of the revenue is divided between the competing clubs as a start fee. Another 40% is based on performance, 10% on coefficient, and 10% on market pool.
