Alabama toddler dies after being left alone in hot car. 27th in USA this year

A thorough investigation is ongoing Alabama, eastAfter a toddler was discovered dead in a car on Tuesday afternoon.

According to an update posted on the Blount Sheriff’s Office’s facebook page, the Oneonta Police Department stated that multiple agencies are investigating the two-year-old boy’s death after he was left alone in a hot vehicle.

The boy was reportedly found by family members at the Kids Campus Daycare off State Highway 75, around 3:06 pm. Police said that the toddler wasn’t under the supervision of the daycare facility.

The sheriff’s office stated that the boy may have been in the car for a longer time than expected.

WBRC FOX 6 Chief Oneonta Police Officer Clifton stated that “we want the community, and everybody to be mindful their backseats when they get out their cars.” “Check to make sure that there aren’t any animals, persons, or children.”

According to No Heatstroke, this boy’s death is Alabama’s first case of pediatric vehicular heatstroke in 2022. It also marks the 27th such death in the United States. The number of pediatric heatstroke deaths this year is four more than the 2021 total.

The National Safety Council recommends that parents/caregivers stick to a set routine and avoid distractions to decrease the possibility of forgetting a child in the car.

“Place a purse or briefcase in the back seat. This will force you to look around before you walk away.” NSC is posted on its site. Keep your child safe by keeping the car doors closed so they can’t get in. Also, teach them that cars don’t belong to them as play areas. Even if you’re running a short errand, there is no safe time to leave your child in a car.

Oneonta police, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, Blount County Department of Human Resources and Blount County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
