After meeting his rescuers, the Puppy’s best reaction was to be found in a cemetery.

Missouri cemetery staff were not alarmed to see a shadow walking through their cemetery one night. Recenty, there was an influx of visitors, with the majority being four-legged.

They were able to identify their visitor as a small stray dog the next day after getting a better view. Because he was missing most of his fur, and had very painful feet (SRSL), they contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis.

Donna Lochmann (the chief life-saving officer at SRSL) said that many stray puppies were found in the cemeteries.

“They just get under the fence and decide that they like it because it’s quiet,” Lochmann said. “It’s a huge cemetery, so they have a lot of space to get away from people.”

Lochmann and employees of the cemetery devised an immediate rescue plan because every dog deserves a home. They scattered and searched the cemetery for the puppy.

After hearing an area commotion, one search team member found the dog hiding under a bush.

Lochmann took the puppy and treated his skin problem as well as his sore feet. Kamper was his name after the gravestone that he was found in the cemetery.

“It was really emotional for everyone, especially for Kamper and the volunteer who called us,” Lochmann said.

Kamper smiled with joy upon seeing the cemetery workers once again. He charged each one and made huge expressions of gratitude to their faces.

He was also a delight to the employees of the cemetery.

“The woman who called was so happy that we’d gotten him and that he was doing so well,” Lochmann said. “On our end, we certainly appreciated that she’d contacted us so that he could get some help.”

After shedding some tears and showering his friends with kisses, Kamper said goodbye to his friends at the graveyard. He did not stay too long at SRSL when he returned.

Kamper was able to find a loving foster home quickly thanks to the shelter. Kamper is able to play with his siblings while he waits for his future home. He also receives regular medicated baths as well as new jammies to protect his healing skin.

“It’s so fun to watch him play and be happy, knowing that he’s not this scared, sick dog trying to survive on the streets anymore,” Lochmann said. “Now he gets to just be a puppy.”
