After claiming that educators know better than anyone what children need, teachers union cleans up

The National Education Association appears to be doing some clean-up. A tweet SaturdayThe statement that educators “know best than anyone” what students require was met with harsh criticism. 

Although the NEA, the United States’ largest teachers union, did not respond to the tweet immediately, 5,000 people replied, including Betsy DeVos who said “You misspelled your parents.” 

The National Education Association took issue with DeVos’ tweet, and noted the role of parents in shaping their children’s education.

Families and educators work together to ensure that all students have access to the necessary resources and opportunities. Teachers union replied to DeVos tweet.

DeVos blasted the NEA in a Fox News Digital comment, calling the union out as “attacking parents”.

Other Twitter users came to DeVos’ defense, echoing her criticism of the NEA.

“[DeVos]It is correct,” Cory DeAngelis (a senior fellow at American Federation for Children) tweeted. 

“Out of touch teachers unions are saying they know more about our kids than we, the parents. The billionaire is right,” tweeted LA Parents Union (a Los Angeles-based advocacy group for parents).

The NEA’s initial tweet, which drew backlash from thousands on Twitter, claimed “Educators love their students and know better than anyone what they need to learn and to thrive.”

Rep. Jim Banks, R.I. tweeted “Parents know Best”. 

“This is absurd. Better than their parents? Ryan Walters, Oklahoma Secretary for Education, replied.

“Parents. Parents love their children“And know better than anyone what they own children need,” Bethany Mandel, conservative author, tweeted. 

In recent years, relations between parents and teachers unions have deteriorated due to the academic slowdown in the United States in the wake COVID-19-related school closings.

The NEA and American Federation of Teachers were involved in a series of emails with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last year. Americans for Public Trust found correspondence that showed the two largest teacher unions in America had influence over last-minute school reopening guidance changes and a slow walk to get kids back to school.
