A Professional Good Girl Responds to Emergencies With The Perfect Plan

Koda, a 5-year-old golden retriever named Koda, did a great deed.

Koda serves as the Georgetown Fire Department’s community engagement and therapy dog. When she’s not helping Jonathan Gilliam teach children and adults fire safety, Koda lends a hand as a therapy dog.

While on the job, Koda’s assignments are typically low-stress. The professional girl was forced to help her father when he was locked out of his fire station.

Gilliam, the department’s deputy fire marshal said, “At the time, I thought it was just my keycard that wasn’t working.”

Gilliam had just finished cleaning up after the event and the door to a public safety building was closed behind him. The door was not open when he tried to open it with his keycard.

“My initial thought was, ‘How am I going to get back in?” Gilliam uttered.

To ask for assistance, he hastily dialed the building’s internal 911 dispatch facility.

While he waited for help, Gilliam glanced inside the door. He looked Koda directly in the eyes, and then he thought of a strategy.

“I thought to myself, ‘I wonder if Koda could open it,’” Gilliam said.

Gilliam knocked on Koda’s glass door. The happy dog answered Gilliam’s call by jumping up on the glass door and pressing the lock button to unlock it.

“That was the first time she’d opened a door or even attempted,” according to Gilliam.

Here Koda can unlock the door.

Gilliam discovered the building’s keyless entry system was broken once inside. He would have been locked out had someone from 911 dispatch gone to help him.

Gilliam and the rest of the Georgetown Fire Department personnel on duty were saved from a night of turmoil by Koda’s modest but powerful jump. Koda responded to her dad’s gratitude with an enthusiastic tail wag in celebration though she had no means of recognizing the significance of her gestures.

Koda has been back to her routine duties since that evening but her fellow firefighters have not stopped praising Koda for helping her father when he was most in need.
