A Liberal magazine writer expresses gratitude for abortions during Thanksgiving

Americans enjoyed their dinner with their loved ones around the table. This ThanksgivingOne liberal magazine shared stories about women who are grateful for their abortions. 

The Nation The article was published Thursday morningThe book is titled “We are thankful for our abortions.” In it, writer Nikiya Natale interviews women who say having had an abortion (in some cases more than one) has given them opportunities in life they wouldn’t have otherwise had.

This writer responds to those who claim they support abortion but don’t celebrate abortions. She insists that she is grateful for “both of my abortions”. She claims that her abortions allowed her to plan for a baby and have it on her terms. 

Another woman from New Jersey told her that she had been blessed with a healthy body. Multiple abortionsThis has enabled her to complete college and start a small company. 

“I feel deeply grateful that I was capable of making a good decision for myself,” she said. 

A Virginia woman says she was so grateful to the clinic for safe abortion care that she returned two weeks later and applied for work. She told the staff that she wanted to be “somebody’s person” to help patients conflicted about the “stigma against multiple abortions.”

“From then on I realized I needed to celebrate my life, my abortions, and how thankful I was for each abortion I had,” she says, lamenting: “Why can’t there be an abortion narrative where people are happy, had choice, and created the life that they wanted?” 

Another woman from Los Angeles says she received two abortions – one from a toxic relationship and the other after her first child, when she realized the “full-time responsibilities and economic implications of raising a child.”

Texas woman says she had her first and second abortions at 21 and eight years later, when she got pregnant. She says that although her first abortion had given her opportunities she wouldn’t have had otherwise, she still didn’t want to be a parent. 

“I struggled through the morning sick and the realization of a part of me still believed that abortions had to have been justified,” she said. 

They shared their tips on how to tell loved ones who are pro-life. One said it’s best to not be worried about “being gentle with others and focus more on trusting ourselves.” 

Since the beginning of the 20th century, abortion has been a central theme in national discourse. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decisionIn June 1973, Roe v. Wade was overturned. This landmark 1973 decision legalized abortion at federal level.

The Democratic Party is now without the power to make abortion rights a federal law. They have just lost the House of Representatives. The abortion debate now rests squarely with the states, who must navigate and update the numerous laws in place after Roe.
