A Dozen People Are Feared Missing, One is Dead after a Landslide in Italy

  • According to reports, 1 person has been killed in an accident on Ischia Island, Italy.

Authorities said that a landslide off the coast of Italy left at least 12 people missing and one person dead.

The death toll caused confusion as Matteo Salvini, the Italian Vice Premier, initially stated eight deaths. However, Matteo Piantedosi, the Interior Minister, later confirmed that there had been no confirmed deaths, according to The Associated Press.

According to the outlet, between 10 and 12 people are still missing while more than 100 are still stranded. 

Piantedosi, RAI state TV’s correspondent, stated that “the situation is very complex and very serious because possibly some of those people under the mud,” according to The Associated Press.

The Times reported that inclement weather made it difficult for rescue workers to reach the island by boat and helicopter. However, 70 firefighters and 44 doctors managed to make it, however.

“We want to thank all the rescue workers who, in extremely difficult conditions, at the risk of their own lives, managed to land on the island today,” foreign minister Antonio Tajani said at a press conference, per the Times. 

According to The Times, Fabrizio Curcio is the head of the Civil Protection Agency. He stated that rescue efforts will continue well into the night. According to the outlet, 70 people have been evacuated from their homes. 

Curcio declared, “The nights are coming.” “This will not make our work any easier. It was difficult because of the weather, sea conditions and today.
