Mark, who requested his last name not to be used, was walking along the streets of Sarajevo and heard a strange sobbing sound. He concentrated on the cardboard box that was hidden in the woods to the side.
Mark finally found the puppies while they were still huddled in the dirt. They pleaded for help as he got closer and closer to the box.
Lisa, Mark’s wife, said, “The idea of leaving them there never crossed his mind.”
Mark saw the puppies while they were staying in Sarajevo’s rental apartment. They had just quit their jobs to travel the world and had sold their home in 2019.
The Nomadic Canadas, a couple known by this name, were relieved to find that their host allowed them to keep the dogs while they considered their options.
It was hard to keep up four dogs in a small space.
“[The puppies] were up every few hours, so we slept in shifts,” according to Lisa. “We did our best to keep them occupied.”
Mark and Lisa both knew they couldn’t bring the puppies with them on their trip, but they didn’t know how to get them home.
“My head was reeling with what we were to do next,” Lisa said. “For the next six days, we felt many things all at once: heartbroken that they were abandoned, thankful we found them, panicked about what to do next, joyful to spend time with them, sleep deprived, fearful, and stressed that we would not find a solution, yet hopeful and focused.”
After the death of their beloved Kelso, three-years prior, the couple knew they could not let go of their dogs.
“We know how much a dog can enrich life, and we absolutely adore them,” Lisa remarked.
A couple of neighbors noticed them walking their puppies in front o the apartment building. After being drawn to the dogs by the family, they quickly began to look for a place for the puppies to live.
“We are convinced this entire story is one of fate,” Lisa said.
The couple reached out to Save The Animals Now for help. They are a large shelter in the area.
Lisa felt relaxed as soon as she arrived at the shelter. She could see that the puppies would be given competent and professional care.
“We were incredibly relieved to see that the puppies would be in good hands,” Lisa said. “There was crying.”
A few weeks later, the couple got some wonderful news: All four puppies were adopted and would soon be living with their new families.
They will give these dogs the life they deserve with their support.
