Samsung has been competing for the crown of wireless earbuds for many years. Sony, however, is still in the lead as the most highly praised pair. The gap between the two is closing with the right improvements. But, there are some things you should consider before choosing one over another.
Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro vs. Sony F-1000XM4 What’s the difference?
Both companies use similar design principles in the construction of their earbuds. Both pairs are available in matte finishes. Each pair also has three pairs of ear tips so that you can find the perfect fit. They won’t slip, but Samsung has the edge in ruggedness. Galaxy Buds 2 Pro IPX7 protection. The IPX7 protection. WF-1000XM4It’s only IPX4, so they are not ideal for running or intense workouts.
Sony’s foam tips are more secure than the ones Samsung uses. This is because the Sony buds are more bulky than Samsung’s. Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro are designed to shed some of the weight from their predecessors.Â
The same applies to their charging cases. Samsung has used a design from the Galaxy Buds Live to create its own charging case. It’s small, portable, and supports wireless charging. Protective cases are easy to move from one case to the other.
Sony is not known for sticking to the same design of its cases. While the WF1000XM4 case is larger, it’s not too noticeable. These cases can be carried easily and wirelessly charged.Â
Both pairs can be used with apps that increase both speed and customization. Sony includes options to customize the voice assistant and onboard controls, while Samsung offers unique features such Voice Detect or the gaming mode. It is worth spending the time to explore both apps as there are many features to be found.
What are the Differences?
App support plays an important role in how these buds sound. Both have a bass-friendly soundstage, but you can adjust the EQ section of both apps to get more balance. Sony has both presets and the ability to save your presets. Samsung doesn’t offer presets that you can customize.Â
The audio settings and features that are available can cause things to diverge. Both support AAC and SBC codecs. However, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro has Samsung’s Seamless Codec HiFi and the WF1000XM4 has Sony’s LDAC. Each device can play hi-res audio. It is important to have devices capable of handling these streams. Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones are the only ones that support 24-bit audio. Sony requires that your phone and the audio source support LDAC and provide high-res playback.
Spatial audio can also be used to provide virtual surround sound via different routes. Dolby atmos is supported by the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro. You can also try 360 Audio. Sony’s 360 Reality Audio works well for the WF1000XM4. The best results are achieved when either protocol is supported by the source. Your results might vary.
The sound quality of the custom options is as deep as they get, but it also depends on other factors. Both pairs will deliver great sound quality. However, Sony has the advantage here as the sound quality is unbeatable. Samsung narrowed the gap to make things interesting.
It also did the same for ANC. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro blocks out background sound better than their predecessors. Samsung has improved noise cancelation by putting the WF1000XM4 ahead of the pack. This is an indication of how far engineers have come. Sony gets passive isolation from foam tips. The ANC will be able to reduce background noise if there are more gaps between your ears.
The excellent microphones in both pairs mean that solid performance is also possible through the ambient modes. You can hear what’s going on around you, even though unique features such as Samsung’s Voice Detect can sometimes feel like a work-in-progress.Â
You have options. Voice assistants are also available. Samsung will always offer Bixby, but you can also choose to use Google Assistant or Alexa. Sony allows you to decide between these two options.Â
These two batteries won’t have the same battery life. With ANC turned on, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro only can last five hours on a single charge. The WF-1000XM4 can last up to eight hours. Each case comes with an additional three charges so they are even on that front.Â
Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and Sony WF-1000XM4 – Who should you choose?
Although the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro can be used with any Android phone and some of their features are only compatible with Samsung’s ecosystem, they work well with other Android phones. It will work with all Android phones, not just Samsung’s, once it is enabled.
