After appearing to be in danger of being relegated in January NewcastleThe 2021/22 season was completed in 11th place. They have been impressive this term.
Eddie Howe‘s side currently sit in sixth in the table having been beaten just once in their opening nine Premier League matches.
Director of football for Newcastle Ashworth, who made the move to St James’ Park from Brighton in May, has outlined his plans for the future.
Speak to the Daily Telegraph, he said: “There isn’t a timeframe for us, but, aspirationally, the club wants to be competing for trophies and at the top end of the Premier League.
“There’s a lot of good clubs out there, though. You have the top six who have established revenue streams, established European money, established 25-man squads… that have been investing in their club for a number of years at different levels than we have.
“We have no God-given right within one or two transfer windows to go ‘bang, we should be competing with the top four.’
“One of the restraints we have is working within FFP. We can’t go and buy any player we want and pay them whatever we want, we have to be creative.
“I don’t think there is a ceiling… but the size and potential of this club is huge.”
Before adding: “There’s lots of steps that have to be put in place, but the support network and the potential of the club is huge. I would like to think we will win a trophy in the next six years.”
Ray Parlour, Arsenal legend believes that the Toon outfit has the potential to surpass Liverpool, Manchester United and Man City.
Former Gunners midfielder, he told the TalkSPORT Breakfast: “I think Newcastle now is a very attractive club to get sponsors.
🤝 “Newcastle would be attractive for sponsors! It would give them more revenue.”
💰 “That would give them more money for players! It’s going to be like Man City.”

“Arsenal have got lots of sponsors, Man City, Liverpool, Manchester United… now Newcastle will be quite an attractive club for someone to sponsor.
“You have all different partners and suddenly that will give them a little bit more revenue which maybe gives them more of an opportunity to go and buy some players or keep your best players.
“I’ll be amazed by that, it’s a work in progress for Newcastle, I think it’s going to be a little bit like Man City, it isn’t going to just happen overnight, which it hasn’t done.
“But they’re sitting really nicely in the league, a great result last week (5-1 win against Brentford), I think there’s a real buzz around the city now.
“I’m sure everybody is looking forward to what Newcastle do in a few years.”
