The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros: Why you should purchase
The MacBook Pro is a tremendous machine that checks off nearly every box on a pro user’s wishlist. It’s fast, capable, and powerful, and brings Apple’s pro laptop into the forefront of the pack. It is a compelling reason to buy one. The display brings mini-LED and ProMotion to a Mac, and it has extreme brightness (1600 nit peak) as well as excellent color accuracy. Apple claims that the M1 Pro chip runs 70 percent faster than M1 and that the M1 Max’s GPU is four times as powerful as the M1. It has more RAM and several times more memory bandwidth. The SSD is also super-fast.
There are many more ports. Apple added three Thunderbolt 4 ports for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. There’s also HDMI and an SDXC Card slot. There’s an upgraded 1080p FaceTime camera as well, though you’ll need to deal with a screen notch like on the iPhone. But we think that’s an acceptable trade-off for so much power.
The 14- and 16 inch MacBook Pros: Why you should purchase
Although a new MacBook Pro is an expensive investment, it will provide the power you need right now. Every new Mac is always the best Apple has ever made, but the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro is a gigantic leap both over the prior model and in the history of the MacBook Pro, and we think you’ll be very pleased with your purchase.
We recommend you get as much memory and storage as you can afford. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros start at 16GB RAM. You can go up to 32GB with M1 Pro or 64GB with M1 Max chips. The upgrades aren’t cheap, but they’ll be well worth the investment years from now when your machine is still running as smoothly as it was when you bought it.
If you make the decision to make an investment now, don’t buy it directly from Apple. Third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy can be found here The MacBook Pros 14- and16-inch models are available at steep discountsYou can save up to $400 on regular price (The Apple store doesn’t sell clearance items or offer sale prices on current inventory.) One drawback to shopping at these sales is the limited customization options. For example, you will have to accept whatever RAM or SSD configuration is offered. But if you’re fine with that, you’ll save a lot of cash.
What is the point of third-party retailers offering such huge discounts? That leads us to…
Macworld recommends WAIT
Multiple ReportsApple could update the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pros within the next few weeks according to reports. Apple’s desire to clear its inventory in order for the new model to be available to them is likely responsible for third-party retailer sales.
The M2 Pro Max processor upgrade will be the next update. It is the follow up to the M1 Pro Max. Although performance will increase, it is unlikely to be as dramatic as the switch from Intel chips into the M1 series.
Since the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro’s design is just a year old, Apple won’t change it. It should still have the same screen size, ports, keyboard and trackpad. It’s all about the processor and GPU for this upgrade.
You can still get the most recent technology if you’re willing to pay full-price, but not a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro.
