Chaka Zulu (real name Ahmed Obafemi) was arrested on Sept. 13 by Fulton County Jail. He was charged with murder, aggravated attack, possession of firearms during the commission a crime and simple battery. Atlanta Police DepartmentAnnounced Saturday
“Had Mr. Zulu lawfully not defended himself, Mr. Zulu might have been killed that evening.”
Zulu was placed under $200,000 bond and released that day, according to jail records.
Police charged Zulu — along with several others — in connection with a June 26, 2022, shooting at a restaurant on Peachtree Road in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. According to authorities, officers responded at 11:35 to a report that multiple people had been shot at the restaurant.
The three injured men were taken to the local hospital where one of them later died. According to police.
Gabe Banks of Banks Weaver LLC, who represents Zulu, told Fox News Digital that his client is “disappointed” in APD’s decision to charge him. Banks provided surveillance footage and other evidence to show that Zulu was “attacked, jumped from behind” by at least four others. Banks stated that his client was legally allowed to carry a gun and fired it in self-defense.
Banks wrote that Zulu was forced to defend him after the gang repeatedly punched, kicked, and stomped on him, while he was lying down in a defenseless position,” in an emailed statement.
Banks said that Mr. Zulu was almost killed by a bullet to the back in the shooting. He is still recovering from the injuries sustained that night.” “Mr. Zulu was at his place of business that night and had every right to defend himself … Mr. Zulu fully cooperated with law enforcement officials and their investigation, and voluntarily turned himself in once he learned of the arrest warrants.”
Banks stated that his client was “confident” that he would be released from all charges.
