6 ways to fix your AirPods if they're not charging

AirPod charging problems can be solved by a variety of troubleshooting options.

  • If your AirPods don’t charge, ensure that you have a charger and that the light is on.
  • Your AirPods should charge whenever they're in the charging case, but sometimes they don't work as expected.
  • If all else fails you may need to factory reset or have your AirPods serviced by Apple.

Your AirPodsAirPods are designed to provide at least 4.5 hours listening time per charge and up to 30 hours if you keep it in the charging case. Your actual mileage will vary depending on which model AirPods your have.

Sometimes things can go wrong and you need to be prepared. AirPods don't charge the way they're supposed to. Here are a few reasons this could happen and how you can fix it.

Is your AirPod case charged enough?

As a general rule, you should be able to put your AirPods in your case, and the case's battery will recharge the earbuds. However, this only works if your case has enough battery power.

You can find the answer by placing your AirPods inside the case. Close the lid. Next, place your iPhone in the case and then open the lid. After a few seconds, you should see a status screen that indicates the charging status of both the AirPods as well as the case.

If the case's battery is empty — or has less than about 10% battery life — then the AirPods won't get a charge. You'll have to plug the case into power to charge it up.

Is the charging case light on?

You should see the status light on the charging case when the AirPods are first plugged into the charger or placed on the wireless charging pads.

If it does not, that's a strong indication the problem isn't with the AirPods, but it's with the charging case (or elsewhere).

Charge them overnight

On rare occasions — but especially when the earbuds have been completely drained — it takes longer than you expect to recharge them. In fact, there are situations where they won't start charging normally for a few hours.

Leave the AirPods overnight to charge. You can check again the next morning to make sure they are charging normally.

Make sure to clean your AirPods

It's possible that your AirPods charging contacts are dirty enough that they can't make a solid charging connection.

Take a look at the charging connections. Clean the charging case and AirPods. You should be careful, but thorough, and then charge them again.

Factory reset your AirPods

If you tried everything else and they're still not charging, your AirPods might have a glitch that a factory reset can resolve. Unfortunately, you'll have to re-pair your AirPods and this will wipe out any saved settings, so only do this if nothing else has worked so far.

Your AirPods should be in the case Start the Settings Tap and open the app Bluetooth. Next, locate the entry for your AirPods.i To the right Tap You can forget about this deviceYou must confirm that you are doing what you want.

You can then open the lid to set up your AirPods. If setup isn't automatic, press and hold the button on the back of the case to start the setup process.
