2022 NFL MVP odds: Joe Burrow pushing Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts for Patrick Mahomes

For 2022, the field is becoming more tighten for this year. NFL MVP award as we leave Week 7 of the regular season. Given how wide open the league seems after seven games, though to head into this season, it gives the race for the league’s top individual honor even more intrigue, considering how the award often falls — the quarterback for one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl by regular season’s end.

The top players to keep an eye on

QB Josh Allen, BillsQB Jalen Hurts, Eagles

Both major candidates watched the Super Bowl from home or on vacation this weekend, while both their Super Bowl-contending teams were on a week off. So it’s not as if their chances dropped by any means.

Allen ranks second in ExpectedPoints Added per Dropback (via TruMedia), at 0.30, and third in passer ratings at 109.1. Hurts is fourth in EPA per Dropback at 0.16, and sixth in passer rating of 98.4.

The hype surrounding the MVP claims of both players will continue to build if they win more. The Bills will host. PackersWhile the Eagles host, Steelers.

QB Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs

Mahomes took advantage of arguably the top two candidates on a bye week and put on another offensive display in the Chiefs’ Week 7 win in San Francisco.

The Kansas City passer threw for 423 yards with three touchdowns and one interception resulting in a 132.4 passer rating in the team’s demolition over the 49ers. These numbers pushed Mahomes up to the top in EPA per dropback (0.35) and passer rating (109.5). These numbers are so impressive that Mahomes is not the leader. If the Bills slip, that heads-up loss against Allen in Week 6 won’t be forgotten.

Week 8 is a bye week for the Chiefs.

Rising player to be on the lookout

QB Joe Burrow, Bengals

I wrote last week that I would not give up on the 2019 Heisman Cup winner. All he did was In the first half, achieve a perfect passer ratingThe Falcons. With 481 yards passing, he had an 81 percent completion percentage and three touchdowns. He also did not pick up any picks. This gave him a 138.2 passer rating. Burrow also added another rushing touchdown.

He’s thrown 13 TDs and one interception in the past six games. Burrow ranks No.1 in passer rating at 117.2, and is currently the highest at this point. Burrow is No. 2 in this span for EPA per dropback, 0.27. Overall, Burrow is fifth for passer rating (102.7) as well as EPA per dropback (0.14).

The Bengals will be facing the BrownsCleveland Week 8.

QB Geno Smith, Seahawks

Some might have laughed at me for naming Smith a sleeper after I beat the Seahawks. Lions. But he’s not going away as he’s only climbed up the oddsmakers’ boards.

The Seahawks took it on the ChargersIn Week 7. Smith was a strong leader of the offense. For a 105.5 passer rating, the Seattle passer threw 210 yard with two TDs (and one pick) and he had a passer rating of 105.5. Smith hasn’t faltered much this year as he ranks third in passer rating at 107.7 and sixth in EPA per dropback at 0.13. With a 73.5 completion rate, he is also the league’s leader.

The 6-1 will be held in Seattle GiantsIn Week 8.

Players still lurking

QB Lamar Jackson, Ravens

I’m surprised his odds still have him among the top five candidates. He’s only accounted for three total touchdowns in the last four weeks.

Jackson went nine of 16 passing for 120 yards with no TDs and no interceptions along with 59 rushing yards in Baltimore’s Week 7 win over Cleveland. His 80.2 passer rating against Cleveland was at least his highest score since Week 3. Jackson is 28 in the past four weeks.ThEPA per dropback (-0.15), 29ThIn passer rating (70.4).

The Ravens will take on the Buccaneers in Tampa in Week 8.

QB Justin HerbertChargers

His numbers haven’t lagged as much as Jackson’s past few games. In four of his last five games, Herbert’s performance has been a bit pedestrian by his standards.

The Los Angeles passer threw for 293 yards on 33 of 51 passing with two TDs and one interception resulting in an 84.8 passer rating during the team’s Week 7 loss to Seattle. Herbert is fourth with 287.0 yards passing per game, 12 touchdowns and four picks. Herbert is only 12th.ThPassenger rating (91.8) and 14.Th in EPA per dropback (0.04).

Week 8 is a bye week for the Chargers

Players disappearing from the map

QB Aaron RodgersPackers, QB Tom Brady, Buccaneers

It’s easy to lump these two fading stars together as their numbers and their team’s results continue to crumble after The Packers lost to the Commanders The Buccaneers were defeated by the Panthers.

Brady (+8000) and Rodgers (+8000 respectively are ranked eighth and ninth in passer ratings, respectively. It’s clear, though, there’s something off with both offenses. Rodgers ranks 28Th in EPA per dropback (-0.08). Brady’s EPA rate isn’t too terrible ranking 12ThAt 0.05. Brady only had one game this season that received a passer rating above 98.4 and four games that were 87.8.

Sleeper

QB Kirk Cousins, Vikings

The Minnesota quarterback hasn’t really amassed eye-popping numbers. The Vikings are 5-1 and the quarterback is seventh in the MVP rankings. Cousins is averaging nine touchdown passes to five interceptions. He’s only 19ThIn passer rating (88.7), and 20Th in EPA per dropback (-0.04).

Like the Giants, and perhaps QB Daniel JonesIf the Vikings won the division or had a record better than 13-4, they would need to consider bringing in someone from the Vikings.
