‘1899’ ep. 1-6 review – A promising voyage of slow burning horror and mind-bending mysteries

Creators of DarkJantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, once again proved that they are puzzle masters in the TV genre. Their latest show is 1899,This series is yet another mind-bending and head-scratching experience that will keep you scratching your heads until the end.

Set during the turn of the 19th century, the show follows Maura Franklin (Emily Beecham), a troubled doctor running away from her past to a new world, America. Kerberos is the Greek name of the ship, which refers to Cerberus, the monstrous dog who guarded Hades and the number of heads that guards it. It’s a dark name for a ship carrying around 1500 people to a better future. Everything feels strange from the start, and there is a dreadful, foreboding presence in the air. The scene’s dark tone does not cause the scene to feel dreadful, but rather the characters acting as if they aren’t. Normal.

Along with Maura, other characters onboard include a widowed captain (Andreas Pietschmann), an unhappy French couple (Mathilde Ollivier and Jonas Bloquet), suspicious Spanish brothers (Miguel Bernardeau and José Pimentão), an unhappy geisha (Isabella Wei), her mother, (Gabby Wong), and a mysterious man (Aneurin Barnard). Just below their deck are other travellers in the ‘second-class’ such as a confused young man (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), his rebellious sister (Clara Rosager), and his devout but seemingly problematic parents (Maria Erwolter and Alexandre Willaume). Based on what I’ve seen, the actors have mastered the portrayal of the joy and the angst that the characters experience. Sometimes they seem confused and confused, though. One character, however, is the captain. He feels like he just traveled through the universe. Dark’s timeline to 1899. His mannerisms are not compatible with others.

The actors come from many countries, so the ensemble is diverse. While the show’s central language is English, 1899 switches between Danish, Portuguese, French, Polish, and more, the characters are heavily dependent on body language to express themselves. Some people may not like this show as it requires viewers to pay attention to every detail. But if you overcome this, you’d enjoy the subtleness and mannerisms each actor brings to the table.

The show is rich in diversity and also features deep dialogues that remind you of DarkThis includes poems by Emily Dickinson as well as Slyvia Plat. The similarities are not just in the words of the characters, but also in the flow of the story. The first episode, which is very painful, focuses on the process of building a world. You will soon be hooked by episode three and start to root for certain characters. You are still astonished at how the universe is moving by episode six. The twists and turns of the thriller series were unlike any I’ve ever seen.

The thing that will stick with you is the way the creators tackled the issues of the day, while in some ways mirroring our current struggles. The class divide is a clear example. 1899. There are also themes of greed, sexuality, hypocrisy, mental illness, women’s rights, as well as religious zealots. Even though the elements are subtle, you may feel them screaming at you. It is not common for a series like this one to touch on social and political issues. However, the creators have managed to do so in a way that is truly remarkable.

Every character is given enough screentime, and their growth through the series has been well-thought out. Creators emphasize the importance of the transformation of the human mind and how one’s past influences their decision-making. There are many parallels between this theme and other themes. LostStanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock works Predestination: The OA And Westworld,You get more questions than you can answer. Although it seems like the show cannot throw more mysteries at you, each episode brings a new puzzle that is bigger than the one before. Some scenes can be compared to games such as Bioshock Infinite Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.

The cinematography is outstanding, with some scenes leaving an impression on your mind. Some TitanicThere are also a few scenes that look like -sketches, such as the people using coal to power their engine and glimpses of similar wooden corridors and dining halls. Although the movie had a brighter backdrop, 1899 has dark tones. The dark greys and blacks will make you feel depressed and every shadow in the corridor can heighten your senses. The filmmakers have incorporated music and cinematography to draw you in. The music oscillates from soothing to melancholic while interpolating 20th-century pop like The Killing Moon, Don’t Fear the Reaper White RabbitThe whole show feels like a compilation of past and current moments.

Verdict: 1899 The film moves slowly and demands attention. Some viewers may not like it. The screenplay is also confusing and intelligent. This can make it frustrating. It will appeal to those who enjoy unravelling layers of mystery to uncover meaning and explanations. You should avoid it if you are impatient.
